Startup Festival Alumni Onavo Raises $10M from Horizons Ventures and Motorola Mobility Ventures
Israeli-based Onavo was one of the top companies that presented at last year’s Startup Festival. The company provides a way for shrinking data consumption on iPhones, in turn reducing data charges and costs. Recently, Onavo announced a new $10M round of funding from Horizons Ventures and Motorola Mobility Ventures.

Interestingly, when asked by the reporter in that article about which award he’s most valued winning so far, co-founder & CEO Guy Rosen says the “Grandmothers’ Award” at Startup Festival:
Of the awards Onavo has earned so far, Rosen tells me his favorite was the “Grandmothers Award” from last year’s International Startup Festival in Montreal. Onavo was chosen as the most innovative app by a group of technology-agnostic older women, which is a clear indication that the company’s value is easily recognizable.
Startup Festival had 6 grandmother judges that watched all the startup presentations and asked some of the most interesting and poignant questions. They selected Onavo as the winner (Hoot.me came in 2nd).
Phil Telio tells me that this year’s Startup Festival (scheduled for July 11-13, 2012 – check out startupfestival.com) will include grandmother judges again, as well as teenage judges. They may have other kinds of judges and demographics represented as well.
