Lenddo, the world’s first online community that empowers the emerging middle class to use their online social connections to build their creditworthiness and access local financial services, today announced it has closed an $8 Million Series A investment. Investors include the Silicon Valley firms of Accel Partners, Blumberg Capital, and Omidyar Network, as well as Montreal-based iNovia Capital and New York-based Metamorphic Ventures. Also participating in the round are several prominent Angel Investors include Geoff Judge, David Kidder, Scott Heiferman and Barry Silbert. The Investor Group’s track record includes early investments in Facebook, Groupon, Tencent, Kiva and Prosper.

“Lenddo seeks to improve the lives of millions of people in emerging markets,” said Lenddo’s Founder and Global CEO, Jeff Stewart. “We witness the impact of our loans every day in the Philippines and Colombia — from pursuing education to helping sick relatives to repairing homes after natural disasters — all of this is made possible because of our members’ positive online reputation.”

Lenddo’s platform allows its members to use their reputation on social networks such as Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter to obtain life improving loans. Founded in 2011, the Lenddo community has tens of thousands of members in over 35 countries and member growth continues to double about every 90 days. Lenddo currently provides loans exclusively in Colombia and the Philippines. The company plans to use the new investment capital to grow the engineering team, accelerate growth and expand operations to more emerging market economies.

“Lenddo has the potential to transform how millions of underserved in the emerging markets access credit,” said Arjuna Costa, director, investments at Omidyar Network. “Jeff and his team have harnessed the power of technology and online social networks to create a uniquely intimate lending process. By linking community and reputation to creditworthiness, Lenddo has the power to replace the impersonal risk-assessment tools that currently exclude most of the world’s population.”

Lenddo’s proprietary algorithm was designed by Chief Scientist and PHD, Dr. Naveen Agnihotri. “At Lenddo, we discovered that the willingness of your community to connect and vouch for you is an incredibly powerful predictor of creditworthiness,” said Dr. Agnihotri.

The Senior Management team also includes Co-Founder and Asia CEO, Richard Eldridge and Americas CEO and former Head of New Markets, Latin America at Google, Dan Gertsacov. The company currently has employees in Manila, Bogotá and New York City. John Elton a Partner at iNovia Capital will join the Board along with Bruce Taragin, Managing Director at Blumberg Capital, who co-led the round.

About iNovia Capital

Startup Canada will be showcasing Toronto’s top entrepreneurial talent this week as part of a two-week celebration of entrepreneurship in Ontario, the third stop in Startup Canada’s six-month National Tour. The Tour, which launched in March, is travelling across the country to promote entrepreneurship, identify key challenges facing Canadian entrepreneurs, and ignite new community-led solutions to those challenges.

“Over the past few years, Ontario has built a fantastic network and ecosystem of entrepreneurs and innovation, in which MaRS is an enthusiastic participant. We look forward to working with Startup Canada to strengthen and celebrate these efforts, and expand the network of entrepreneurs and support communities across Canada,” said Ilse Treurnicht, CEO, MaRS Discovery District.

The Tour’s first stop in Toronto is to attend Discovery 12, Ontario Centres of Excellence’s annual conference, which is bringing together nearly 2,600 industry professionals, innovators, investors, scientists, researchers and government representatives.

“Discovery is the perfect launch pad for Startup Canada’s Ontario tour and we are proud to support the initiative,” says Dr. Tom Corr, President and CEO, Ontario Centres of Excellence. “Innovation is the engine of entrepreneurship and Discovery is the province’s premier innovation showcase and the hub that connects everything together in one place.”

Tonight, Startup Canada is also co-hosting a special event the Centre for Social Innovation to explore and prioritize strategies for boosting social innovation and social enterprise in Canada.

“We are delighted to be part of Startup Canada, an essential and timely effort to improve the landscape for start-ups across our country,” said Eli Malinsky, Director, Programs & Partnerships with the Centre for Social Innovation. “We’re especially pleased to add a dose of ‘social’ to the mix, as we work to create more and better supports for social entrepreneurs and social ventures in Canada.”

Throughout Startup Canada’s National Tour, provincial steering committees are helping put the spotlight on local startups and build connections across Canada’s entrepreneur communities through live webcasts of the Town Halls and active social media networks.

In addition to being championed by patrons such as Brett Wilson (Host of RiskyBusinessTV, former Dragon & serial entrepreneur), Heather Reisman (Founder, Indigo Books & Music), and Dani Reiss (Founder, Canada Goose), Startup Canada has also received support nationally from a number of ambassadors and industry sponsors Microsoft, Gowlings and Ernst & Young.

Other sponsors include Gowlings, Microsoft, Ernst & Young, Artik, Kick Ass Media, PubliAir, VideoBooth the Association of University Research Parks Canada, the Canadian Association of Business Incubation, the Evidence Network, Francis Moran & Associates, FreshBooks, MSBi Valorisation, NextMTL, the Ottawa Technology Transfer Network, Podio, Backbone Magazine, HootSuite, ITWorld Canada, Paper.li, and Techvibes.

In addition to Toronto, Startup Canada will be visiting Waterloo, Windsor and the York Region before moving on to New Brunswick at the end of May and heading west to the prairies in June. A full schedule of Toronto’s events and the complete National Tour is posted on the Startup Canada website – www.startupcan.ca/tour

Partnership with 3 anti-virus leaders and a separate operating system means anyone can clean infections like the pros for a fraction of the price.

The FixMeStick is a Linux-based device that runs before Windows boots, enabling it to clean the PC while malware is inactive.

Computer viruses should be scared. Today, Montreal-based start-up, FixMeStick, has launched the first ever, consumer-ready USB device for removing viruses from infected PCs.

What makes this product unique?

The principles of the FixMeStick are not new to security IT professionals: multiple anti-virus engines increase the number of detectable viruses, and clean external scanning devices prevent viruses from hiding or from interfering with their removal. But, for the first time, FixMeStick has built these principles into a ready-to-go USB device that enables everyday users to do what the pros do.

“This is about enabling everyone to rid their machines of malware,” says co-founder Marty Algire. “And it will help people continue to enjoy their computers and the Internet.”

The FixMeStick costs $49.99 for an unlimited number of uses on three PCs per year. Renewals can be purchased for $24.99 annually.

Co-founder Corey Velan explains, “The FixMeStick enables anyone to use the biggest advantage they have over Internet thieves: physical access to the PC. This way, PC owners can use the FixMeStick, a safe external device, to remove infections.”

The FixMeStick is powered by three of the biggest names in anti-virus software: Kaspersky Lab, Sophos, and GFI.

“The FixMeStick is an innovative solution that delivers great value to consumers,” notes Julian Waits VP, Strategic Relationships at GFI Software.

“This collaboration will allow organizations and their users to significantly minimize the impact of a malware infection,” stresses Michael Rogers, Vice President, Global Alliances & OEM at Sophos.

And Stephen Le Hir, VP Global Business Development at Kaspersky Lab, says, “It’s always a pleasure to see an innovative product, such as FixMeStick, emerge on the market. I am sure this innovation, boosted by Kaspersky Lab’s anti-malware expertise, will help protect and cure millions of computers.”

About FixMeStick

Headquartered in Montreal, FixMeStick is a private company, founded by two IT security veterans, Marty Algire and Corey Velan. The company’s namesake product is a Linux-based device that runs before Windows boots, enabling it to clean the PC while malware is inactive. It contains three leading anti-virus engines: Kaspersky, Sophos, and GFI’s VIPRE, integrated behind a single full-screen application. The FixMeStick is set up and ready to go right out of the box. No additional installation is required and automatic updates are stored directly on the device. The FixMeStick is easy to support and any quarantine operation is 100% reversible. The FixMeStick works on any PC with a minimum of 512 MB of RAM.

Battles of sexes shown to spur adaptive sex differences

Sex differences account for some of the most spectacular traits in nature: the wild colours of male guppies, the plumage of peacocks, tusks on walruses and antlers on moose. Sexual conflict – the battle between males and females over mating – is thought to be a particularly potent force in driving the evolution traits that differ in males and females.

However, the genetic processes responsible for producing such traits are not well understood, nor how they evolved from their simpler less elaborate ancestral forms. We tend to assume that each tiny step in evolution is an advantage. But are they really?

To investigate, a research team led by Locke Rowe of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto with collaborators Ehab Abouheif of the Biology Department at McGill University, and Abderrahman Khila of Toronto and McGill, found a way to recreate those incremental steps, turning back the evolutionary clock and watching the transformation of simple antennae into more elaborate ones. The antennae are used to grasp females during mating interactions, and the researchers were able to measure their increasing utility in this new function as they were increasingly elaborated. The study entitled “Function, developmental genetics, and fitness consequences of a sexually antagonistic trait” is being published in Science May 4.

The study looks specifically at water striders, Rheumatobates rileyi, in which the battle of the sexes is evident in the struggles on the water’s surface during mating. Males benefit by mating frequently, females by mating infrequently: both have developed traits to give them the upper hand.

“Over evolutionary time these male and female traits tend to escalate in a manner analogous to an arms race,” says Rowe.

A key difference between the sexes is the male water striders’ antennae, which have evolved from typical sensory devices to large and elaborate grasping devices.

Using high-speed video to observe mating, the researchers noted that each structure – hooks, enlarged segments and spikes – on the antennae appeared precisely designed to grasp females. They then looked at which genes were being expressed during development of the male antennae (just prior to maturation). Knowing the gene provides the opportunity to modify its expression, and therefore modify the male antennae. One gene looked promising so the researchers knocked down its expression during development using RNA interference.

“In this way, we were able to create males with a range of antennae from a simple female-like antennae all the way to the highly elaborate antennae with hooks and other grasping mechanisms of the males we see today,” says Abouheif.

The researchers then tested a set of these males with differing antennae to determine their utility in grasping females. They found that as the antennae became more elaborate, mating success increased. “This means that the struggle over mating could account for the ever increasing elaboration of these antennae,” says Rowe.

The study is unusual in bringing the tools of genetic model systems to a natural system where much is already known about the selective forces involved in shaping the traits under study. It presents one of the rare case studies (another is Darwin’s finches) where a direct linkage has been described between known forces of selection, evolutionary change morphology, and the underlying genetic basis.

The research was funded by the Canada Research Chairs program, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and ATIP-Avenir program CNRS, France.

Charlottetown, PEI (Monday, May 7, 2012)
Canada’s entrepreneurial spotlight will shine on Prince Edward Island this week as it plays host to Startup Canada’s National Tour and gathers more than 150 local startups and enterprise support organizations to discuss, celebrate and inspire entrepreneurship across the province.

This is the second stop in Startup Canada’s National Tour, which began in March in Nova Scotia. Between now and September, 2012, the tour will engage 25,000 Canadians and 250 partner organizations to identify actionable proposals and priorities for advancing entrepreneurship in Canada.

“The Startup Canada campaign is the signature of a new spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation in Canada,” said Rory Francis, Executive Director of the PEI BioAlliance and Chair of the Startup Canada PEI initiative. “That spirit is also at the core of Prince Edward Island’s Bioscience Cluster’s momentum and growth.”

Francis is hosting today’s Town Hall and Launch Event in Charlottetown. Other speakers include Duncan Shaw, Founder & President of Mullache Corporation, and a host of local entrepreneurs and enterprise support organizations. The Honourable Allen F. Roach, PEI Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning will also attend and will bring greetings from the Province at the Launch Event on Monday.

“Startup Canada is a wonderful event for young, potential entrepreneurs to meet experienced entrepreneurs first hand and hear their stories,” said Shaw. “To me, entrepreneurship is the only career choice where young people start by hearing all of the gaudy failure statistics. Being an entrepreneur is a fantastic career and an event like Startup Canada is invaluable for young people to realize entrepreneurship is a viable career option.”

Rivers Corbett, serial entrepreneur, author and a Startup Canada Board member, has first-hand experience being an East Coast entrepreneur.

“I have been an entrepreneur for more than 15 years and up to now there has never been an organization like Startup Canada to help launch and drive the entrepreneurial spirit in our country,” said Corbett.

Following its events in PEI, Startup Canada will move to Ontario and New Brunswick before heading west. Along the way, provincial steering committees are helping showcase local entrepreneurs on a national media platform. The movement is also being fuelled online through Startup Canada’s interactive website, live web-streamed broadcasts of the tour, and active social media networks.

Local partners include the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Innovation PEI and the Prince Edward Island BioAlliance, The Greater Charlottetown & Area Chamber of Commerce, the University of Prince Edward Island, PEI Business Women’s Association, PEI Newcomer’s Association, Resources West, the Mi’kmaq Confederacy, the Innovation & Technology Association of PEI, Central Development Corporation, and Junior Achievement.

Other sponsors include Microsoft, Gowlings and Ernst and Young, Artik, Kick Ass Media, PubliAir, VideoBooth the Association of University Research Parks Canada, the Canadian Association of Business Incubation, Francis Moran & Associates, FreshBooks, MSBi Valorisation, NextMTL, the Ottawa Technology Transfer Network, University of Ottawa, Podio, Backbone Magazine, HootSuite, ITWorld Canada, Paper.li, Sprouter, and Techvibes.

Tomorrow, the Startup Canada team will meet with Charlottetown entrepreneurs, visit local high schools, and speak at the province-wide Youth Entrepreneurship Forum before moving on to Summerside. A full schedule of the week’s events and complete National Tour is posted on the Startup Canada website – www.startupcan.ca/tour
