The Startup Genome is an ambitious project to take a data-driven approach to measuring startup success. The project recently released some findings, including a ranking of top startup ecosystems around the world.
Montreal ranked #25. Vancouver is #16. Toronto ranked #4 behind Silicon Valley, New York and London, UK.
You can read a more detailed report on TechCrunch.
At www.startupcompass.co you can also benchmark your startup against the thousands that were surveyed. It’s an interesting exercise to get a feel for where you’re at comparatively speaking with other companies. The data produced (I went through the benchmarking tool to test it) is quite revealing.
Here are the rankings of the top 25 startup ecosystems, sorted by average throughput (volume of startups produced):
- Silicon Valley (San Francisco, Palo Alto, San Jose, Oakland)
- New York City (NYC, Brooklyn)
- London
- Toronto
- Tel Aviv
- Los Angeles
- Singapore
- Sao Paulo
- Bangalore
- Moscow
- Paris
- Santiago
- Seattle
- Madrid
- Chicago
- Vancouver
- Berlin
- Boston
- Austin
- Mumbai
- Sydney
- Melbourne
- Warsaw
- Washington D.C.
- Montreal
The Startup Genome project goes into a lot more detail than just startup throughput in their results and you can get the current report from their site.
Side note: I did participate in the survey, providing the Startup Genome team with my thoughts on the Canadian startup landscape.
So … we’re number 25. Pretty good considering the number of big cities in the world, but what do you think?
